It was the Summer of 2009 that Dark Seas took off on its maiden voyage. Sharing like-minded influences based on the coastal living they had grown up on, the small team came together with a vision to start a new brand. Both East and West Coast perspectives weighed in heavily from the inception. The common bond amongst the team has always been rooted in the fact that being on, in, or near the water represents good times.
When defining the aesthetic of the brand, the team at Dark Seas tossed a wide range of influences in their own sort of melting pot. Some grew up on the east coast where cold weather, stormy seas, crabs, oysters and Yuengling’s created connections. Some come from the west coast in an area where you have a wide range of options at your fingertips. Head south of the border to explore the coast for surf. Stay close and catch the military running beach front exercises in tanks and helicopters. Venture out of one of the local harbors to the offshore fishing grounds or time at one of the Islands. These shared experiences all played a role in defining the Dark Seas brand.
With the brand vision in mind, the team established a network of artists that they work closely with each season. The biggest thing that sets Dark Seas apart from other brands is the diversity and depth of its art. Their style is heavily rooted in nods to maritime influences and references from years long past, infused with what they see developing on the horizon. To compliment all of the art, Dark Seas builds quality, durable, functional pieces that stand the test of time. From traditional flannels, military jackets and custom chain stitched fleece to fully welded board shorts, one thing is constant – the pieces perform in the settings they were inspired by.
